About

Patchwork Ethnography is a research and pedagogy project led by Gökçe Günel and Chika Watanabe.

The project seeks to challenge the ways we practice and teach ethnography while offering methodological innovations.

Chika Watanabe

Chika Watanabe explores issues related to international aid and development, specifically looking at disaster preparedness in Japan and Chile. She is Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Manchester.

Gökçe Günel

Gökçe Günel’s research focuses on how urban environments transform in the face of energy and climate change-related challenges. She is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Rice University.

Patchwork Ethnography began in 2019 with a collaboration between Gökçe Günel, Saiba Varma, and Chika Watanabe. To learn more about the aims of the project, see A Manifesto for Patchwork Ethnography here.
